Etsy accepts a listing video only if it fits a short list of limits. Get one wrong and the upload is refused, usually without saying which rule you broke. Here is the whole list, taken from Etsy's own help pages, along with what each one means in practice — including the one rule Etsy states two different ways.

Length: Etsy's own pages disagree
This is the one rule worth knowing properly, because Etsy states it two different ways:
- How to Add Listing Videos: "Your video may be 3-15 seconds long."
- How to Create a Listing: "up to 20 photos and 2 videos that are 5-15 seconds in length".
Both agree on 15 seconds at the top. They disagree on the floor. Until Etsy makes them match, export at least 5 seconds and your file is valid whichever rule is enforced. That is why Mockup to Video's length meter starts at 5 seconds rather than 3.
Fifteen seconds is shorter than it sounds: three shots at four seconds each, plus a moment between them, and you are done. Somewhere between 8 and 15 seconds gives one product room for two or three angles.
File size: 100 MB
This one is hard to break by accident at these lengths. A 15-second 1080 x 1080 video from a phone or a browser encoder usually lands between 3 MB and 15 MB. If you are anywhere near 100 MB, something is set far higher than it needs to be: a 4K export, or a bitrate meant for a full film rather than a square clip.
Smaller is also better for the shopper. Etsy serves your video to people on phones, often on mobile data.
File types
Etsy lists MP4, MOV, FLV, AAC, AVI, 3GP and MPEG. In practice, use MP4. It is what phones record, what editing tools export by default, and what plays everywhere. MOV is the usual second choice if you shot on an iPhone and never converted it.
Resolution: 500px minimum, 1080px ideal
The minimum is 500px, but that is a floor, not an aim. Etsy's own guidance calls at least 1080px ideal, and it matters more than sellers expect: your video sits next to your photos, which are usually 2000px or more, and a soft video next to sharp photos looks like a mistake rather than a style.
1080 x 1080 is the safe default. It fills the listing's square space on a computer and still looks right on a phone.
Aspect ratio: square or moderately tall
Etsy states the aspect ratio should be 2:1 or 1:2 — in other words, not wider than twice its height and not taller than twice its width. Two shapes fit comfortably inside that:
- 1080 x 1080 (square). Matches Etsy's listing images, so nothing gets cropped oddly in the grid.
- 1080 x 1920 (vertical). A ratio of 0.5625, just inside the 1:2 limit. Fills more of a phone screen.
An ordinary widescreen clip (1920 x 1080, which is 16:9, or 1.78 times as wide as it is tall) sits inside the 2:1 limit, so it is allowed. What fails is anything more extreme: ultra-wide cinematic exports, or a very tall crop past 1:2. Widescreen is allowed but rarely flattering here, because Etsy shows it in a square space next to square photos.
Sound: it gets removed
Etsy strips the audio when it processes your video. There is no point mixing music, and no point choosing a soundtrack for mood. What is left is motion, so the motion has to carry the video on its own: a steady move across your product, not a quick pan that only makes sense with a beat under it.
Two videos per listing
You can add up to two. A common pairing is one video showing the product itself and one showing it in a room or in use.
What the rules do not tell you
- Movement beats a slideshow. A hard cut every two seconds reads as a filler. A slow push in on one detail holds attention longer.
- The first second is the whole game. The video plays small, beside your photos, on a phone held at arm's length. Start on the product, not on empty space.
- You do not need to film anything. If you sell prints, wall art or anything print-on-demand, your mockups are your footage. A camera move across a mockup gives the same effect as a filmed product video, and it is the only option when there is no physical item to point a camera at.
